And what I learned is that I don’t have the slightest clue how to plot out a mystery story. I have a general idea of my characters and an idea of what the crime is, who did it, why and how they did it but all of that is completely different than plotting out the story of how the detective figures it out.
My detective in this case is named Ethan Allen Bentley and he’s the black sheep of a snooty old money family from Vermont. He’s ex military and he’s just been placed in charge of security at a space station cum all inclusive holiday resort where he finds his predecessor has been murdered. Obviously he needs to figure out whodunnit but as soon as he starts getting somewhere he realizes that he’s next. Sounds pretty basic, right?
Yeah, well, it is. It aint no Agatha Christie story but it should have some suspense, some cool detectiving (shut up, is so a word), and some stuff that is cool science fictiony stuff. I think it will be a decent story.
I just don’t know how to reveal clues and shit so I have some research to do.
But, I wrote about 500 words of it today anyway just because I want to keep in the habit of writing. I basically got him from the shuttle craft that gets him to the space station into his quarters on the station. I may throw it all out later but who cares, the point now is to develop the habit.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to figure out WTF I am doing.
